And fish were caught

The day started off beautifully, with temperatures to hit 26ºC. This was the day Meaghan Roy of CHEX-TV joined Pete Gabany, president of Limelight Advertising & Design, on the Ganaraska River to learn how to flyfish. The footage will air May 20, 2010 at 5:30pm on CHEX-TV.

“Meaghan is a quick study,” said Gabany. “She got the casting down fairly quick. Like learning any new skill, her technique will be refined with practice.”

The water was warm — about 14ºC — but the rainbow trout were jumping, and a fly hatch was coming off the water. Gabany demonstrated casting and collected samples of the bugs that live in the river. Roy got her first look at a case caddis and mayfly larva — and then used the artificial versions of these bugs on the water.

It wasn't long before Roy had caught her first rainbow trout. Through the morning, Meaghan pulled several rainbow from the river.

“It wasn't unusual to see so many trout," said Gabany. "The Ganaraska River is a good fishery, and with the help of the Ganaraska Conservation Authority, hopefully it can soon be made even better.”

The day finished with Roy and Gabany catching about a half dozen fish each, and Meaghan vowing to return for more.
